“For John came neither eating nor drinking, and they say, ‘He has a demon.’The Son of Man came eating and drinking, and they say, ‘Look at him! A glutton and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners!’ Yet wisdom is justified by her deeds.””

I love that this verse defends John's choice of abstinence as well. Freedom goes both ways. There is lots of room in liberty for individual believers to make decisions and all maintain a clear conscience.
In essentials, unity; in non-essentials, liberty; in all things, charity.
Great insight... Paul offers further explanation of liberty in 1 Corinthians, articulating the reality of being free to or not to do many things... Christian liberty is unique because it works both in 'the freedom to do,' and 'the freedom not to do' many things...
Cheers.
